Call to Worship

Isaiah 52:7

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!”

Almighty God, by your power you raised Jesus Christ to rule over us.  Before him every knee shall bow, and every tongue confess that He is Lord.  We thank you that He alone commands our lives and gives us freedom to be agents of his love.  Glory to you for the gift of his life!  Glory to you for his saving death!  Glory to you for Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns as our risen Lord, now and forever.  Amen.

The First Scripture Reading is from
Mark 1:14-15 (NIV)

14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,”he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

Yet Not I But Through Christ In Me

The Second Scripture Reading is from

Luke 22:24-30 (NIV)
24 A dispute also arose among them [that is “among the disciples”] as to which of them was considered to be greatest. 25 Jesus said to them The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead the greatest among you should be like the youngest and the one who rules like the one who serves. 27 For who is greater the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29 And I confer on you a kingdom just as my Father conferred one on me 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Questions for Personal/Family Reflection

Reflect personally or as a family on the following questions…

  1. In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus teaches us to pray that God’s kingdom would come and that his will would be done on earth.  What do you think it would look like for that to happen in our world?

  2. A lot of people think that God’s kingdom begins after death.  How does knowing that His kingdom begins here and now change the way you live for Jesus?

  3. What’s the difference between a butler and a king?  Which way do you think people tend to relate to God?  How does either view tend to impact a person’s life?

  4. The good news is that Jesus brings a kingdom, and he is the king.  In other words, Christians believe Jesus is in charge.  Imagine examples of what it would look like to follow Jesus’ teachings…

    … at work/school?… at home/in your neighborhood?… during a pandemic?

… with those that annoy you?

… with those who are not “impressive” or “cool enough” to associate with?

Time of Prayer

(Take some time to pray personally or for one another in your own words th=
at God’s kingdom would come on earth as it is in heaven today.)
