Call to Worship

2 Corinthians 1:20 – 22
For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ.  And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.  Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ.  He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
We thank you and we praise you, faithful God.  By your power at work within us, may we cheerfully proclaim your goodness, selflessly show your love, and joyfully come into your presence.  You are our king and our glory. Set your seal upon our hearts.  Fashion our lives into a song of your justice and goodness, so that the world may know of your righteous reign.  We trust you to keep us in your care.  Guard us from evil, protect us from harm.  Help us to know you, and knowing you to follow you so that all our comings and goings may conform to your purpose in our lives, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

The First Scripture Reading is from

Matthew 13:24-30 (NIV)

24 Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. 26 When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.

27 “The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’

28 “‘An enemy did this,’ he replied.

“The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’

29 “‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’”

The Second Scripture Reading is from
John 17:13-19 (NIV)

[Jesus prayed to the Father…] 13 “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.” 20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

Questions for Personal/Family Reflection
Reflect personally or as a family on the following questions…
  1. What is the problem with Christians doing things FOR Jesus, but not LIKE Jesus?
  2. Identify a time when it was difficult for you to choose to follow Jesus.
  3. Why is it important to regularly and consistently share life with a group of other Christ-followers?
  4. In what way is God currently working to shape you more into the image of Christ?
  5. In what ways is the church currently mimicking the world?  How could it be different if it mimicked Jesus?

Time of Prayer
(Take some time to pray personally or for others in your own words that the world would be infected with the life and love of King Jesus.)

The Blessing

Ephesians 3:10-12 (NIV)

10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms,11 according to his eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.
