Call to Worship

Psalm 148:1, 2, 5, 13

Praise the LORD!  Praise the LORD from the heavens; praise him in the heights!  Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his host!  Let them praise the name of the LORD, for he commanded and they were created.  Let them praise the name of the LORD, for his name alone is exalted; his glory is above earth and heaven.  Praise the LORD!

Invocation

O God, beginning with the angels and descending through the skies, your call to worship unites all creation in song.  Give us wisdom and strength, enabling our wholehearted praise, for you alone are worthy; you alone are Lord.  It is too easy for us, your people, to talk about you without worshiping you, to worship you without obeying you, and to obey you without joy.  Infuse us with such passion for you that our words become worship, our desires become obedience, and our lives reveal the joy that can be found only in you.  We pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

The First Scripture Reading is from…
 Colossians 3:1-27

3 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

The Second Scripture Reading is from

Ephesians 2:11-22

11 Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called “uncircumcised” by those who call themselves “the circumcision” (which is done in the body by human hands)— 12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, 16 and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. 17 He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

Personal/Family Reflection

Reflect on the discussion starters below for personal or family reflection…

  1. Scot McKnight writes, “The success of a church is first determined by how many invisible people become visible to those not like them.” Who do you think is most invisible to you? What could you do to “see” them better?
  2. Share a time when Christ led you to connect with someone you would not have chosen to connect with on your own.
  3. How has the “weight” of Jesus impacted the trajectory of your life and its various aspects?
  4. What else, besides Jesus Christ, might a congregation be tempted to worship and orbit around?

Time of Prayer
(Take some time to pray personally or for others in your own words that the world would be infected with the life and love of King Jesus.)

Benediction
John 13:34-35 (NIV)

34 “A new command I give you:
Love one another. As I have loved you,
so you must love one another.
35 By this everyone will know that you
are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Amen
