Call to Worship

Psalm 13:1,5,6

How long, O LORD?  Will you forget me forever?  How long will you hide your face from me? I trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.  I will sing to the LORD, because he has dealt bountifully with me.

Invocation

God our Father, in Jesus Christ you have come so near that our hearts can sing even when we feel most alone.  Guard our thoughts, guide our steps, and help us to put our trust in no one but you.  Grant us wisdom to anchor our lives in your love and the perseverance to live each day in joyful obedience, no matter what challenges may come.  Loving God, in you we hope; in you we live.  You are the source of serenity, giving peace that is beyond our understanding.  In you we are still; in you we live; you live in us; we worship you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

The First Scripture Reading is from…
Psalm 139 NIV

For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.

1 You have searched me, Lord,
and you know me.
2 You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
3 You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
4 Before a word is on my tongue

    you, Lord, know it completely.
5 You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.

7 Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,”
12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.

13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from
you
    when I was made in the secret place,
    when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your
book
    before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts, God!
How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand—
when I awake, I am still with you.

19 If only you, God, would slay the wicked!
Away from me, you who are bloodthirsty!
20 They speak of you with evil intent;
your adversaries misuse your name.
21 Do I not hate those who hate you, Lord,
and abhor those who are in rebellion against you?
22 I have nothing but hatred for them;
I count them
my enemies.
23 Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting
.

The Second Scripture Reading is from
James 1:1-8 NIV

1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations: Greetings. 2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

Personal/Family Reflection

Reflect on the discussion starters below for personal or family reflection…

  1. In what ways have you noticed the Lord’s companionship in this time of crisis?
  2. What rhythms/habits keep your life rooted in Christ’s companionship?
  3. What do you think gets in the way of you being completely honest with God and yourself?
  4. Is there a trustworthy person in your life that consistently asks you the question, “Where are you?”
  5. What might the Lord be revealing/renewing in you personally during this crisis?

Time of Prayer
(Take some time to pray personally or for others in your own words that the world would be infected with the life and love of King Jesus.)
