Call to Worship

Romans 12:1

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your true and proper worship.

Invocation

Holy and loving God, you spoke creation out of chaos and brought your people out of darkness into the marvelous light of your love.  May the music of your creation and the praises sung by your people bring joy to you and comfort to a tormented world.  We acknowledge that you are just and holy and you need nothing from us, but delight in our humble trust and thankful obedience.  Help us to be loving and faithful servants, especially in these most challenging times.  Inspire us to join with all creation in jubilant praise and thanksgiving through our Lord Jesus Christ, in whom and through whom all things have their being.   Amen

The First Scripture Reading is from…
 Psalm 50

1 The Mighty One, God, the Lord,
speaks and summons the earth
from the rising of the sun to where it sets.
2 From Zion, perfect in beauty,
God shines forth.
3 Our God comes
and will not be silent;
a fire devours before him,
and around him a tempest rages.
4 He summons the heavens above,
and the earth, that he may judge his people:
5 “Gather to me this consecrated people,
who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.”
6 And the heavens proclaim his righteousness,
for he is a God of justice.

7 “Listen, my people, and I will speak;
I will testify against you, Israel:
I am God, your God.
8 I bring no charges against you concerning your sacrifices
or concerning your burnt offerings, which are ever before me.
9 I have no need of a bull from your stall
or of goats from your pens,
10 for every animal of the forest is mine,
and the cattle on a thousand hills.
11 I know every bird in the mountains,
and the insects in the fields are mine.
12 If I were hungry I would not tell you,
for the world is mine, and all that is in it.
13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls
or drink the blood of goats?

14 “Sacrifice thank offerings to God,
fulfill your vows to the Most High,
15 and call on me in the day of trouble;
I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”

16 But to the wicked person, God says:

“What right have you to recite my laws
or take my covenant on your lips?
17 You hate my instruction
and cast my words behind you.
18 When you see a thief, you join with him;
you throw in your lot with adulterers.
19 You use your mouth for evil
and harness your tongue to deceit.
20 You sit and testify against your brother
and slander your own mother’s son.
21 When you did these things and I kept silent,
you thought I was exactly like you.
But I now arraign you
and set my accusations before you.

22 “Consider this, you who forget God,
or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you:
23 Those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me,
and to the blameless I will show my salvation.”

(Here For You)

The Second Scripture Reading is from

Luke 6:46-49

46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

Personal/Family Reflection

Reflect on the discussion starters below for personal or family reflection…

  1. Who in your life has helped you to be a better listener to the story of Scripture?  In what ways did that person help you listen?
  2. How has the Bible impacted the way you tell your story?
  3. In what ways might people use the Bible to avoid or contradict Jesus?
  4. What has Jesus been teaching you lately and how are you responding?

Time of Prayer
(Take some time to pray personally or for others in your own words that the world would be infected with the life and love of King Jesus.)

Holy Communion

Instructions

We will be participating in Holy Communion during our Sunday morning Zoom call.  If you are unable to gather with us on Zoom, we invite you to participate in Holy Communion this Sunday, June 7th at 10:50 AM.  For the Communion elements, feel free to use bread, crackers, or anything similar you have in your home. If you have grape juice, please use that, and if you don’t, use a different drink.

Place the elements on a table before the service begins.  If you are alone, receive and read the words of institution and the communion invitation below to participate in this act of unity with Christ and his church. If you are with others, we would recommend that one person offer the elements to the others. Finally, let us be prayerful and reflective as we come to the table together.

Words of Institution
Mark 14:22-24 (NIV)

22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”

23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them.

Invitation

Holding the Bread/Cracker: The body of Christ, given for you.  Take and eat.

Holding the Juice: The blood of Christ, shed for you.  Take and drink.

Ancient Communion Prayer

We thank you, God, for the holy vine of David your servant, which you made known to us through Jesus your servant. To you be the glory for ever.

We thank you, our Father, for the life and knowledge which you made known to us through Jesus your servant. To you be the glory forever. Even as this broken bread was scattered over the hills, and was gathered together and became one, so let your church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into your kingdom. To you are the glory and the power through Jesus Christ for ever.

Ways to Give
