Call to Worship

Psalm 51:15-17 (NET)

O Lord, give me the words.  Then my mouth will praise you.  Certainly you do not want a sacrifice, or else I would offer it; you do not desire a burnt sacrifice.  The sacrifice God desires is a humble spirit – O God, a humble and repentant heart you will not reject.

Invocation

Show us the way to fullness of life, Lord Jesus; that our hearts might be filled with joy, hope, and peace, we pray; that we might respond to opportunities, we pray; that we might be strengthened to face challenges, we pray; that we might become the persons we are called to be, we pray; that we might learn to respect our sisters and brothers, we pray; that we might see the needs of others and give help, we pray.  Amen.

The First Scripture Reading is from…
 Galatians 5:13-18

13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

The Second Scripture Reading is from
Luke 9:23-26

23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. 25 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? 26 Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

Personal/Family Reflection

Reflect on the discussion starters below for personal or family reflection…

  1. What do you think it means specifically to “take up your cross daily”?
  2. To what extent do congregations orient church around the needs of people who have a minimal interest in actually following Jesus?
  3. Does the way we do church reinforce a theology of death to self? Give some examples.
  4. If someone attended our church for three months would he or she say discipleship is one of our central concerns?
  5. What insights might you share with your younger self about following Jesus?

Time of Prayer
(Take some time to pray personally or for others in your own words that the world would be infected with the life and love of King Jesus.)

Benediction
Galatians 5:16-17 (NIV)

So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.

Amen
