Call to Worship

Psalm 13:1-2, 5-6

O Lord, how long will you forget me? Forever?  How long will you look the other way?  How long must I struggle with anguish in my soul, with sorrow in my heart every day?  How long will my enemy have the upper hand?  But I trust in your unfailing love. I will rejoice because you have rescued me.  I will sing to the Lord because he is good to me.
     Invocation
Loving Lord our God, your mercy greets us when we rise, and your grace attends us when we return to our rest.  We recognize that you are a God of grace; help us each day to confess our sin, receive your grace, forgive one another, and live in peace.  Because you are a just and holy God, you need nothing from us, but delight in our humble trust and thankful obedience.  We repent of our shallow rituals and empty sacrifices.  Enable us to do justice, love kindness, and humbly walk with you.  We pray rejoicing in the power of your Spirit, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

The First Scripture Reading is from…
Colossians 3:12-15

12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselveswith compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

The Second Scripture Reading is from …
Romans 15:1-7

We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. 2 Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up. 3 For even Christ did not please himself but, as it is written: “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.” 4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

5 May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, 6 so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

7 Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.

Personal/Family Reflection

Reflect on the discussion starters below for personal or family reflection…

  1. Describe a time when you were disillusioned by the church.  How did you respond?
  2. In what ways can our “wishful dreams” for a community actually destroy community?
  3. Can you think of a time where someone both endured with your shortcoming and encouraged your growth?
  4. Can you describe a time when you grew personally by enduring with and encouraging someone else?
  5. How do you think duration, consistency, and investment in a community impacts our ability to practice grace towards one another?

Time of Prayer
(Take some time to pray personally or for others in your own words that the world would be infected with the life and love of King Jesus.)

Benediction
Galatians 5:13-15
13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.
